If You Dont Already Know Red Dwarf was Created in 1987 by, Grant Naylor (Rob Grant and Doug Naylor).

 The Cast Includes   Crhis Barrie (Rimmer)           Craig Charles (Lister)                 Kriten

                      Christine Khocanski      Norman Lovett (Holly)                And Danny John-Jules (Cat)

 
 
 
 

So The Origianal Story Was that Lister and Rimmer were Bunkmates On the mining ship Red Dwarf. But Lister (after Being Dumped by Khocanski) Smuggled a Pregnant Cat on Board. He Was Caught and Put in Suspended Animation for 18 months, ending up as 3 Million Years (because a drive plate wasnt secured properly).
Holly Brought Rimmer Back as a Hologram to keep Lister Sane. Listers Cat Had Escaped into a air Duct and had been breeding for Three Milion Years, Cat was the Result.
